We’re in for another bumpy ride as the SA Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an additional warning for Western Cape residents who can expect gale force winds with possible gusts of 100km/h over parts of the province from Tuesday evening. Heavy rainfall is also expected to accompany these winds in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands.
An Orange level 8 was issued for the Western Cape, indicating wind speeds that may result in widespread structural damages. This is expected to hit the West Coast District, Cape Winelands and the Garden Route.
“The SAWS warns that strong to gale north-westerly winds, with intense gusts (100-140km/h), can be expected over the interior of the province, as well as along the coastal regions between Alexander Bay and Saldanha,” Anton Bredell, Western Cape MEC for local government, environmental affairs and development planning said in a statement.
According to Bredell, Cape Town may miss the worst of the wine. However, Capetonians should still be cautious as an Orange level warning for rainfall has been issued for the city. Expect roads to be slippery and wet, with conditions expected to remain like this until Thursday evening.
The Cape of Storms is certainly proving why it has received this nickname, as winter storms and heavy rains have seen various neighbourhoods experience localised flooding, electrical faults, and multiple accidents, as per News24.
“The City of Cape Town and its partners are already rolling out support to affected communities. This includes providing milling, hot meals and blankets to affected communities.”
According to the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre, it was currently assessing flood-prone areas across the city.
⚠️ Orange level 8 for Wind resulting in WIDESPREAD structural damages expected over the West Coast District, coast and Namakwa of the Northern Cape, Central Karoo, Garden Route and Cape Winelands of the Western Cape as well in places over the Eastern Cape from tonight 29-30 June
