Temperatures across the Western Cape continue to rise in the next few days, causing extreme conditions for locals. In some parts of the province, the South African Weather Service expects temperatures to rise to a sweltering 45°C on Sunday.
Cape Town Weather Office spokesperson, Robin-Lee Bürger Batties, said exactly three years ago on October 27 2015, the hottest temperature in Vredendal was recorded at 48.4°C.
Interestingly enough, it coincides with this weekend’s extreme heat conditions, Vredendal will be 45°C on Sunday.
In Cape Town, there will be a gradual rise in temperatures from Friday onward. On Sunday, locals can expect a minimum of 18°C and a maximum of 37°C.
The all-time highest temperatures experienced in Cape Town was recorded on March 3, 2015.
“Cape Town International Airport experienced a scorching 42.3°C, Oranjezicht measured at 39.8°C and Cape Town Harbour was a recorded 42.4C°,” Bürger Batties said.
A cool down is forecast from Tuesday onward, bringing relief to Capetonians.
The intense heatwave will be felt in Worcester, Ceres, Paarl and Stellenbosch too with temperatures ranging from 32C° to 37C°.
Locals are advised to keep hydrated, wear sunscreen and cool off within indoor areas that provide shade.
