Cape Town-born Tashreeq Matthews (18) has spend most of his life striving to meet his soccer dreams, working hard every day to achieve them. His determined mindset and daily practice has paid off – the youngster has been awarded a contract with renowned German club Borussia Dortmund.
Matthews is from the small suburb of Hanover Park and up until recently was playing for Ajax Cape Town. The inspiring attacking midfielder had to wait till his 18th birthday to sign with Dortmund.
He left his former club in July and headed to Germany to train with his dream club. Many Capetonians and South Africans took to Instagram to wish him well on his latest post, which he captioned “new beginning”.
Messages of encouragement for Matthews have streamed in from all over Cape Town.
Among the supportive messages came one saying, “Brilliant make Cape Town proud bru,” and another one telling Matthews, “Show those Germans who’s boss.”
Even Benni McCarthy commented, “Well done Tassie, very happy for you and your family, make them proud my man! There’s real hope for people from Hanover Park now, the 2nd person from Hanover Park to go World Wide.”
