For one night only, Cape Town’s world renowned musician, Derek Gripper, will treat audience to a unique interpretation of traditional African compositions, which have earned him critical acclaim.
Gripper has developed a unique interpretation of traditional African compositions, practically developing his own genre for solo guitar.
His records and concerts have earned him high praise in many corners of the music world, including invitations from Mali to perform with kora virtuoso, Toumani Diabate, invites to collaborate with classical guitar legend John Williams, and a solo show at New York’s Carnegie Hall.
“I perform mostly in other countries, very rarely in Cape Town at the moment. Maynardville has become the perfect place to change this, starting with last year’s concert. In this performance I will share what I have learned on the road over the past few years, in slowly evolving a new guitar language based in African music, but fusing this with the languages of all the other music I love.” says Gripper.
Don’t miss this amazing musician live, right here in the Mother City.
