If there’s anything we can take away from the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s that no plans are good plans and that comfort reigns supreme. While 2020 may go down in history as the time humanity hysterically hoarded toilet paper, 2021 can be defined as “less is more,” especially when it comes to fashion. With the cold weather slowly inching closer, we’re looking at winter wardrobe essentials that you should be adding to your closet.

Black leggings:

We dare you to show us a woman who does not own a pair of these babies. Leggings offer enough structure to get you from the top of Lion’s Head to the office in seconds. It’s also perfect for lounging about at home.

Basic sweater:

This is a winter wardrobe staple for both men and women. Dress it down with a pair of jeans or sneakers, or spruce it up with a shirt or statement coat.

Leather jacket:

If you don’t have a leather jacket, then 2021 is the year to take the plunge. A high-quality leather jacket may be a bit of an investment, but it could last for years, and it will never go out of style.

Face mask:

It wouldn’t be a 2021 wardrobe list without this all-important item. These won’t be going out of fashion any time soon, so make sure you stock up!

The All-purpose hoodie:

Whether you prefer lazing about on your couch or strolling the streets (responsibly, of course), a snug hoodie can take you from the office to your couch without much effort on your part.

Pyjamas:

As many businesses transition to working from home, it’s no surprise that our wardrobe has become more … comfortable. Adding comfy and good-quality pyjamas to your closet will help you effortlessly transition from day to night because who needs “normal” clothes, right?

Cotton pants:

Whether you’re picking your kids up from school or heading out on the town, everyone should have a pair of comfortable cotton pants for those days off.

Super soft sweats:

If you’re still looking to stay comfortable, but the thought of spending all day in your pyjamas doesn’t do it for you, then a snug pair of sweats should be your go-to. Pro tip: find a pair that’s lined with fleece. This will help to keep your legs warm through the cold and wet months.
