Cape Town has so many great gems to offer locals and tourists, but there’s more beyond the hustle and bustle of Cape Town’s city limits. From the Cape Winelands to the Cederberg Wilderness, the Western Cape has plenty to offer. Here are our five favourite day trips from Cape Town.

Hermanus

Hermanus is a beautiful small town brimming with history and delicious food. Located along the whale route, it’s a popular destination for anyone looking to catch a glimpse of the majestic Southern Right Whale. Peak season is usually between June – November and is celebrated with an annual whale festival. Whales aren’t the only point of interest that this bustling town has to offer. There are a few wineries and nature trails that are worth a try and located in the area.

Enjoy one of the many hiking trails, a trip to the Stadsaal Caves to look at the well-preserved Khoisan rock paintings, or a delicious wine tasting.

Visit the iconic Ronnies Sex shop – “a very odd pub in Africa” – or take a trip to the historic town of Prince Albert. If you’re itching to see some wildlife, why not visit Aquila Private Game Reserve. It’s the only place near Cape Town that offers safaris and a chance to see the Big Five.

Struisbaai

Struisbaai is an old fishing village that offers a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s situated only four kilometres from Cape Agulhas, so it’s a great stopover for anyone looking to enjoy delicious fresh fish. Walk along the harbour and enjoy gorgeous views of the ocean and colourful boats as you take in the serenity.
