We all love spending time on the beach, especially here in Cape Town. Can you blame us? We have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. In addition to this, the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) has awarded 10 of our beaches with blue flag status.

This forms part of 45 beaches across the country that received blue status, resulting in South Africa having the most blue flagged beaches in the Southern Hemisphere. Not only does the Mother City hold 10 of the Blue Flag beaches, the Western Cape as a whole achieved the highest number of Blue Flag sites, with 29 beaches, eight boats, and five marinas getting the honour.

Blue status is a prestigious eco-label reviewed by a rigorous multi-stage approval process involving both national and international assessments. When is comes to beaches, this means that water is clear and the beach is well maintained and you know that you are on a beach that is up to international standards. This status holds for the 2016/2017 season.
