As police try and quell the violence and destruction that has gripped the nation, police have reportedly found 10 people dead after a stampede occurred during a looting spree in the Johannesburg township of Soweto, reports African Insider.
The incident occurred late on Monday with the death toll for Gauteng now standing at 19 deaths due to the violence.
“The police discovered in the evening that 10 people died during (a) stampede,” provincial premier David Makhura told reporters in Soweto on Tuesday.
The death toll due to the #ZumaUnrest protests are not exclusive to Gauteng, but 26 people have also died in KwaZulu-Natal, states Sihle Zikalala, premier of the southeastern province of KwaZulu-Natal.
“These were people killed during stampedes as protesters ran riot,” Zikalala said, without specifying locations.
TV footage showed dozens of women, some wearing their dressing gowns, men and even children strolled into a butcher’s cold store in Soweto, coming out balancing heavy boxes of frozen meat on their shoulders or heads.
Meanwhile, some residents reflect on what is left of their towns as looters make their way to different cities.
