There are three less illegal firearms in Cape Town as they were confiscated by police officers in two different operations on Wednesday, April 7.

According to the Western Cape provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk, four suspects were arrested at Browns Farm, Phillipi after police followed up on information pertaining to their alleged involvement in two business robberies, two weeks ago.

IOL reported that at about 7am, police officers swooped in on the suspects in the Ramaphosa informal settlement where they confiscated two firearms, a 9mm Norinco and a Glock.

The alleged suspects are believed to be involved in robberies targeting e-hailing vehicles within the Browns Farm area. The four suspects, between the ages of  21 and 27, are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court, and will be charged with possession of illegal firearms, armed robbery, and business robbery.

In a separate incident, police have also arrested a 30-year-old man during an intelligence-driven operation at Site C, Khayelitsha, for being in possession of a 9mm pistol.

The man is expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and pointing a firearm.

Meanwhile, police minister Bheki Cele deployed more police officials to crime hotspots in the Western Cape amid an increase of gang related violence.

The officers are being deployed to “red zone” areas that include Delft, Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein, Nyanga Harare, and Phillipi East.
