Not a bad feat, hey? As a major achievement by municipalities in the Western Cape, 49 beaches, marinas and boats received the international Blue Flag Status. In total, 84 Blue Flags were given to South Africa of which more than half were in the Western Cape.
The Blue Flag is an international award given to beaches that meets strict criteria of excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards.
Grotto Beach in Hermanus won Gold Status this year, and the Western Cape beaches that received Silver Status were Clifton’s 4th Beach, Bikini Beach in Gordonsbay, Kleinmond, Hawston and Lappiesbaai (Stilbaai). Bronze Status was given to Silwerstroomstrand, Camps Bay, Llandudno, Muizenberg, Mnandi, Witsand, Santos (Mossel Bay), Hartenbos, Robberg 5 and Keurboomstrand.
The Blue Flag Status is important for promoting tourism, boosting the economic growth and contributing to permanent job creation in the province. However, one of the most important attributes is the creating of proud citizens and an overall awareness of the importance of the environmental and the preservation thereof.

Short memories or what CT !
Camps Bay has dangerous surf and sandbank conditions and no warning signage. Consequently many drown every season when they are duped by the apparent safety of the Blue Flag status.

Much as I love Cape Town – and I live here, the beaches in the Eastern Cape are way better.
