A 69-year-old man from Somerset West was declared dead following an incident that took place on the evening of Monday, 22 March on Strand Beach.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institue (NSRI), the man, who remains unknown, had gone for a swim near to The Pipe, on the South Western side of Strand Beach when he unfortunately drowned. Reports state the man was spotted face down in the surf by bystanders who quickly rushed to recover him from the surf.
NSRI Gordons Bay, the SA Police Services, GB Med Security ambulance services and Emergency Services were alerted to the incident at 18:36 on Monday evening, shortly after the body was spotted. Upon arriving on the scene, the man was confirmed to be deceased from what appears to be a fatal drowning accident.
The body of the man has been taken into the care of WC Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. Police have opened an inquest docket and are investigating the incident.
