An elderly man was killed by a Rovos Rail train on Monday afternoon. Its believed that the man was crossing the train tracks when he was struck by the oncoming train. Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott said that the incident occurred between Huguenot and Dal Josafar train stations. The incident also caused major delays on Metrorail’s Northern lines. A Stationary goods train at Muldersvlei station was also affected.
The accident caused significant delays between 50 to 60 minutes, Metrorail arranged for its commuters to be transported between Kraaifontein and Wellington stations. No other injuries were reported.
This is yet another blow for Metrorail who are already struggling to restore services on its central line. Engineers have been working around the clock and discovered more damage to the infrastructure caused by vandalism which will prolong the suspension of the service.
Commuters have been left in the lurch for the past two weeks. Scott added that they were unable to say when the services will resume.
“We are unable to give a date for when the line will be operational and this means there is more work that needs to be done,” Scott said.
