With Cape Town topping many a list of top travel destinations, it’s no surprise the demand for accommodation here is at an all-time high.
Good news for visitors is that it looks like work will be beginning on no fewer than 10 new hotels in the Mother City, with 1 500 new rooms to potentially be available in the next three to five years. The city currently has 87 hotels and 11 692 rooms, 7 996 of which are in four- and five-star hotels.
According to research conducted by Joop Demes of Pam Golding Hospitality, the trend this year has changed from four- and five-star hotels enjoying the best occupancy, to three-star establishments being favoured by international visitors.
‘Between January and July, three-star rooms were boasting an occupancy rate of 69.9%. There is a notable undersupply of mid-market hotels,’ he said, theorising that visitors may opt for a drop in stars so they can stay in the city longer.
Nils Flaatten of Wesgro, the province’s agency responsible for marketing, investment and trade promotion, said, ‘Investment in the hotel industry is important to the growth of our economy. The Western Cape has seen an increase in tourist numbers, which impacts on hotel occupancy rates.’

Mr.Nils Flaatten, why not help existing Guesthouse/hotels survive with lowing the rates? The government are “killing” all small business with high rates & taxes. I love my business, and all my guests loving Cape Town…..help us guesthouse owners , helping the city’s income from all over the world .
Kind Regards,
