Cape Town’s first-ever all-female firefighting crew tackled the flames of the Noordhoek wetlands on Monday, January 27. Made up of 15 young women, the crew graduated from a special programme established by the NCC Environmental Services and a local academy.

Last year, the existence of the crew was announced, and January 27 was their first time out in the field.

The female firefighting crew was among the 150 firefighters who helped contain the blaze in the Noordhoek wetlands yesterday.

The fire broke out on Sunday, January 26, and was extinguished by 7pm on Monday, January 27. According to Table Mountain National Parks’ fire manager, Philip Prins, the fires are a result of arson.

One suspect has been apprehended, and no injuries or damage to property have yet been reported.
