A 31-year-old man was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and culpable homicide after he allegedly killed a 21-year-old woman in Somerset West on Saturday, May 22, a report says.

According to IOL, Jonathan Coetzee was driving a Silver Toyota Fortuner while allegedly drunk when he hit Chandre Visser, 21, who was with a friend in Victoria Road, Somerset West.

She reportedly flew about 80 metres and landed on the ground.

Coetzee fled the scene, but a witness, Bjourn Henri, chased after him and managed to catch up with him about 10km from the scene, the report said.

“I saw a traffic officer and we pulled him over. The driver was then arrested and when asked why he ran away from the scene, he said he was in shock,” Henri was quoted as saying.

Police said the accused was released on a warning and was set to appear in court on October 7.

Earlier this month, a member of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at Stellenbosch University, Nomzamo Buthelezi, was also killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident.

In a statement, the university said it was left devastated by the incident, adding that the circumstances surrounding her death formed part of the SAPS’ investigation.
