Alleged serial killer, Brian Mudyiwayana, who faces six counts of murder, has pleaded not guilty to all charges but one, reports say.
His trial commenced on Wednesday at the Western Cape High Court sitting in Swellendam.
“The accused pleaded not guilty to all the charges except the one of being in South Africa illegally. The matter was rolled over to tomorrow morning (Thursday) for continuation of the trial,” IOL quoted the National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila as saying.
The 32-year-old Zimbabwean’s asylum-seeker temporary permit expired 11 years ago, the report said.
According to News24, his case is in connection with a string of murders committed in Wolseley, Worcester, Swellendam and De Doorns.
After Mudyiwayana was initially charged with the murder of Southern Cape teacher Lungelwa Dangatya in February 2019, police uncovered a trail of killings committed between 2016 and 2017, which the state alleges can be linked to the accused, the report said.
A group of Good party members protested outside the court with posters bearing the names of Mudyiwayana’s alleged victims, calling for justice.
“The case must run now. We want to see justice,” one of the protesters was quoted as saying.
