The Independent Electoral Commission has begun the task of tallying all the votes that will come in from across South Africa from Election Day, which took place yesterday.
The final election results are expected to be announced on Saturday, May 11 2019.
Following the results announcement, the country will then set up its new parliament and inaugurate a new president before the end of the month.
By 9am on Thursday morning, the African National Congress (ANC) seemed to retain its majority hold on the National Assembly after voting tallies. The counted and recorded votes were at approximately three million, and the ANC currently holds approximately 55% of these.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has also experienced an increase in support – their numbers have grown by 6% since 2014.
The Freedom Front Plus party is a surprise contender in the top five of the race, having obtained 101 492 votes thus far, but this could change as the counting and capturing process for around 75 percent of voting districts is not yet complete.
