The Townhouse Hotel in Cape Town took to social media to announce permanent closure today, March 25. Come the end of the month, the 50-year-old establishment (as we have come to know it) will be no more.

The evolution of the Townhouse hotel spans over 350 years of city history, having gone through multiple industries over many centuries to become the luxurious hotel that you see today, committed to green hospitality and community development.

Originally set over a stream that fed ships and the Dutch Company Gardens, the location of the Townhouse Hotel has undergone a lot of change. It has been a pasture, later becoming a flour mill and then being absorbed into a failed silk industry. Following this it was turned into a barracks, which later became a tavern and then the small Trocadero Hotel. The property was purchased in 1973 by the Petousis Hotelier family, making way for the Dorpshuis Hotel, which evolved into the 12- storey Townhouse Hotel.

The hotel announced the following on their website:

“We are sad to announce as a family that we have made the difficult decision to close the Townhouse hotel on 31 March 2021.

This signifies the end of a Townhouse era in our family history. The Townhouse hotel was launched in 1971 by Francois and Kitty Petousis and was followed by the iconic Vineyard Hotel in Newlands in 1981. The next generation of Petousis’ continued to build on their parents’ vision, entrepreneurial spirit, values, passion and unique approach to hospitality, launching the Oude Werf in Stellenbosch in 2007.

We thank our wonderful and committed Townhouse team who have played such an integral part in the Petousis family story, many of whom have been with us for decades and have invested years of service to delivering our vision and creating memorable experiences for our guests.

We are handing over the property on 31 March and our April Townhouse bookings will be transferred and hosted at our luxury Vineyard Hotel in Newlands. We look forward to welcoming you to The Vineyard in Newlands and Oude Werf in Stellenbosch soon.”
