Yet another Metrorail train was set alight on Sunday – this time in Philippi’s Leonard Radu Road. It is the fourth Metrorail train affected by a fire in less than a month.
“At about 19:20 on the 24th June 2018 City Fire and Rescue Services responded Radu Road in Philippi where we had three railway carriages were alight,” said Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City of Cape town’s Fire and Rescue Services. “Firefighting crews were initially prevented from extinguishing the fire but eventually managed to do so with the help of the Police Service. No injuries were reported and the probable cause of the fire was determined to be protest-related.”
Two fire engines, two water tankers and one rescue with 16 firefighters responded to the blaze, and were successful in extinguishing the fire.
Last Friday, Muizenberg SAPS sent out an alert to anyone who has information regarding train carriages which were set alight on Monday, 18 June at Steenberg train station.
