We’ve tried to avoid the whole #ZumaMustFall campaign here on Cape Town Etc. I even agree with Ranjeni Munusamy’s opinion that the campaign is misguided and there are far more important things to focus on in South Africa. I also feel you’re bombarded by enough negativity in the local media that we should be a bastion of positivity for all things Cape Town.
Last night, however, the building at the bottom of Kloof Street (or the top of Long Street if you prefer) – which recently became the centre of much controversy due to a somewhat over-the-top #ZumaMustFall billboard – hoisted up the South African flag, and I think that’s pretty cool.
A recent visit to the United States (before the Rand took a mighty plunge, mind you) showed me just how patriotic and downright proud some people can be of their respective country. As I drove through the suburbs of West Coast America, it was refreshing to see almost every second house had the star-spangled banner proudly positioned somewhere in the front garden. Americans love being American, and I can’t fault them on it because that’s what I want for South Africa. I want us to be proudly South African again; proud to display our flag on the front of our own homes. Not just on our tshirts when our preferred sports team is playing.
With so much racism and downright hatred displayed in the media on a daily basis, its almost as if we’ve taken quite a few steps back since 1994, and I don’t quite know how or why we allowed that to happen. ‘Proudly South African’ is not just a slogan we see on local products in the supermarket; it’s a mindset and a way of life.
For me, the flag billboard is a start, and long may it stay up there. #SAFlagMustNotFall

Building Regulations? Did they follow the right channels and was this approved by the city council?
A blanket for all the violations !!
No, I’m not proudly South African but can’t afford to leave the country…
But it’s upsidedown!
Sorry to hear that.
Dont shift the focus
They should rather focus on why the first banner was so popular and what they need to do to fix South Africa! I am, however, relieved that they put up the South African flag as opposed to the ANC flag 😉
the McDonald’s owner is happy now and proudly South African…
This is brilliant but aren’t these people getting annoyed with the fact that they can’t see out their windows? Geez.
So much free social media sharing for McD’s with these pictures.
can’t be proud of a country run by criminals who only use the poor people as propaganda come election time – NO, I’m NOT proud of this country. Proud of the few good people working behind the scenes (Water Shortages & Boere in Nood Groep) to make a difference – YES. Proud of SOME people, NOT all.
Isn’t that a bit hypocritical, ANC complained about the breaking of bi laws. I was definitely not proud to be S African when about ten cowards attacks one person who does not agree with their policies.
Nothing to be proud of
Always and forever #lovemycity #cityofcapetown
He’s lovin’ it.
The pics are from when the billboard was still going up. Once completed the window holes are cut through.
hope he’s food is better than Table View’s 😉
am sure when they gave permission for the space to be used that the issue of a “temporary covered view” was mentioned – think only the violence that broke out when #ZumaMustFall was taken off was not 😉
No, not at all. No reason to be.
actually that flag is an EXCELLENT SYMBOL of how divided the country is – there’s NO unity in that flag – only division. It’s an ugly flag – representing the death of a dream.
I agree with Janet. I’ve changed my view from proudly South African to unfortunately South African.
No I am not proudly South African
I’m glad we disagree on this.
On the bottom of the flag it says that McDonalds is sponsoring it,
Was about to say this.
I wonder if Marius Fransman , Tony Yengeni fall in the category of proud south Africans.
I use to be proud of our new SOUTH-AFRICAN up until I started to realise that me as a white person is not really wanted in my own country where I was born. I am not responsible for what happened before 94 . I am responsible for after that. I try my best to respect others from all colours and races . I defended the new SOUTH-AFRICAN by showing people to think of all the good we have but to no prevail. Everywhere I look and read Facebook twitter papers news tv radio….. I don’t feel welcome in my own country.
Daai kak vlag beteken niks vir my nie
Not proud at all…
If everyone was chilled with it, that is fine. But we shouldn’t infringe on people’s personal space for political agenda unless they give permission to do so. I am sure these people were fine with it.
I am very very happy with the comeback banner though. We need to do it more often and hopefully more as a proactive approach and not a reactive one.
Someone said that the flag is upside down!
They should have put up a poster that said Corruption must Fall! .
It’s not: http://www.southafrica.info/about/history/flagguide.htm#.Vp9Q-RArKL8
I agree with you! I don’t feel welcome here anymore either!
Cape Town Etc I am glad to hear that! It was a nasty tweet that I saw!
Waste of money and resources all this could have been used for better things starting a veggie garden would have been better
Nope! But I am proudly “Republic of the Western Capean” 🙂
Looks like upside down peace sign
With all due respect Elaine Ridgway. As I said, always and forever proudly South African. I don’t feel the need to feel welcome in my own country. I am South African and nothing can change that. #proudlySouthAfrican
I feel exactly the same. I am honest, I am scared to live in my own country!
Why not use perforated cloth? That way no views are blocked from the inside. U0001f44d
That would be people you’re not proud of. The country is b e a u tiful U0001f1ffU0001f1e6
Cheri Gail Coetzee-Hedley a country without people is a piece of land…yes this piece of land is beautiful…and so is every other piece of land on the planet…
Nice free advert for Mcdonalds!
I love the way the flag to me says; “Y” for “YES” it’s time for change and “Yes” we can do it…thank you South Africa…
Oh my Lord Xxxxxxxxxx Going to Macdonalds xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
O my hat, South Africans we better get a grip on our negative attitudes and start working hard to change . O ly votes at the electricians in August can make a change. So let’s get off our Sears and start helping the DA to get all people registered !
Cape Town Etc …you don’t have too – the Kingdom of Hungary’s flag is STUNNING – ours could have been worse – they could have printed Zuma’s face on it – thank heavens they haven’t thought of that yet 😉
And how does that solve the problem ?
This flag is racist.where is a black line here.
@ Cape Town Etc: obviously you guys are more eager to say that you are proudly South African because the Da is looking after you. Here in the rest of S.A, saying you are proudly south african goes down a bitter pill. I am however excited to say “Mmusi for president”!!!
I second that. In afrikaans they call it… “jy grou ou koeie uit die sloot”… And thats exactly what the ANC is doing. Instead of looking to the future they keep on living in the past.
Flag the wrong way round. Hanging like this, the top colour of the flag must be on the right.
@Elaine: the flag is upside down.
Dellareese Hartman Now I don’t know who to believe! 🙂
I was referring to the “criminals” you were talking about. Yes, I am ashamed of our government but remain proudly South African. In fact proudly Capetonian #CapeTown
Just a colourful piece of linen with little traction in the minds of many. It is reminiscent of the coming to power of a thoroughly corrupt political grouping that has steadily brought the country to its knees, and will yet provide the knock out blow.
Love my country dislike my guvment
Opps flag is the wrong way around red at the top, blue at the bottom
You can both leave. Go up to Beit Bridge and crawl under the wire to Uncle Bob. ZA has shared borders with several states. You can go to any one of them without even having to get on a plane.
No I am not proudly South African at all. What has happened in & to this country since 1994 is nothing more than disgraceful. The rest of the world laughing at what we as white people are left with. In the end nothing. I hang my head in shame.
It is horizontal, so it is not the wrong way around. That would depend on where the person that put it up imagined the top of the flag pole would be.
Red is on top or on the right. …..so yes it is upside down.
When hanging a flag this way, you should imagine the flag pole is at the top. Imagining it at the bottom woul really be stupid.
International convention prescribes, inter alia, the pole to be at the top so when the flag is tilted 45º to the left, it should look correct. Horizontal flags must always be flying left to right on drawings, not the other way round.
Maybe you should go and check. And when you find me to be correct – as you certainly will – you can also point it out to the government department who has it all wrong in their brochure about the use of the flag.
PS. On the old flag the Free State flag flies wrongly, but that has to do with design.
Then again it’s draped so I apologise. It’s right 🙂
Come on over to The States, we could use some talented new folks over here.
HEY ZUMA MUST JUST FALL…THIS YEAR WE ARE GOING TO MAKE MORE DIFFICULT TO HIM ,,HE MUST FALL
Thanks Liam McCojones, wish I could! If there’s anything related to nature conservation or zoo keeping let me know please? U0001f609
I drove past it today. It is painted on the wall
proudly South African , ashamed of the government
Org Potgieter Nope, it’s correct: http://www.southafrica.info/about/history/flagguide.htm
I love my country and therefore would like to see Zuma and the ANC gone.
the other way round could then look like a peace sign so win win all the way…
The Cape must secede!!!!!!!
I hear you

Do not get involved in political issues. Support Jehovah’s sovereignty
Cape Town Etc I’ll never fly or hang it any way.
No thank goodness

Proudly south african. Not proudly ZUMA. I can’t be proud if a moronic idiot bordering on insanity.
Proudly Western Cape.We don’t class ourselves as part of the government’s mess they created
Proudly South African ? Sadly not ! What has and is happening in this country is an absolute disgrace. So much evil out there.
I Love my Country Proudly .S.A.with all its Ups& Downs
Why don’t this guy rather spend the money on water or food for the farmers !!!! Or even better feed the hungry on our streets! !! Come on show us what you can do for people in NEED !!!
No, I’m not. Just following the example set by “our leaders”
wow another cover up lets just all ignore to problem and throw some more fuel on the fire #Zumamustfall #pethetic
It’s contravening the city by-laws…. take it down….!!!
Nope, this one is real.
I’m proudly #Zumamustfall
Org Potgieter What a shame.
We were proudly South African long before the DA took office in the Cape.
Yes when everything was still working.
Y south africa Y
No its a disgrace.
There are always billboards up there! Not only now!
I kind of wrote this sarcastically. Sarcasm needs a punctuation mark.
*opening bottle of wine*
Leon Jethro Harvey lol!!! – just get a bottle of wine 😉
Already done son.
Maimane is like a stone for whites they will use it to shot down the bird although they hit it down or missed it they wil throw that stone away after use it as a useless thing and keep enjoying bird meat and forget the hardwork of a stone that did it for them.one day maimane will ben on his knees to anc and ask apology he will feel ashame for himself for let da use him against anc
Lange Lihle don’t live divided. If people want to mix let them be, cause to Cape Town it’s not about colour.
What have to be proud of
Love our flag but Zuma must still go
I am proudly Capetonian
Boring,di other one delivered some action
Perfect SA flag. Clearly shows devision in the design.
Flag is hanging wrong. Red is suppose to be on right side not left. If you lift it up the blue is not suppose to be on top
I am a PROUD south african..just not proud of our president. !!! and that’s my official stand!
So, wrong way round.. So, upside down.. So, stupid..
maak nie saak of dit reg of verkeerd hang .dit bly n lelike vlag
Proudly SA. utter disgust at Zuma’ Anc..Since 2008, going downhill and the stock of the world.. Check the flag.. Green, dividing the Eff (Red) and DA (Blue) And the racist Yellow clinging on for dear life to the green. The V shape black = SACP.Cosatu. in the arms of the green gravy train. Not only must Zuma fall, the whole Anc must be voted out, and tried in a court of law.
Anything is possible….we not even surprised….lmao
I’d rather be labelled ‘negative’ than be in denial of obvious truth, hide my head in the sand and be as dellusional as the writer of this article.
South Africa, let’s build.
Lange Lihle..i dont like MAIMANE as DA leader bcs he is frm da ANC bt nvtheless he has made a speach dat left me wth no choice but 2 vote 4 him n da fact dat gyz like him n da ANC youth league of wich is da “EFF” as we speak ren away frm da ANC it had 2 b a reall consern 2 da ANC supporters bcs as was listerning 2 his latest speech i den reallise dat ANC has lost its reall future on MMUSI MAIMANE n da same applies 2 da EFF

I am very proudly South African but #ZumaMustFall before he succeeds in destroying our beautiful country.
