The City of Cape Town has opened a case of arson with the South African Police Service after a fire ravaged Table Mountain on Sunday, March 15.

“…we will get underway compiling an incident report which will include a damage assessment and trying to establish what caused the fire,” said the City’s  mayoral committee member JP Smith to SABC.

“Residents and witnesses have come forward with video footage and with information that suggests that the fire was actively started by somebody. A case has been laid with SAPS and the city’s investigative staff is engaging those residents, following up with investigations.”

About 230 firefighting personnel were on the scene, and the fire was eventually contained on Monday morning. Seven firefighters had to be hospitalised for injuries sustained while dousing the fire and several properties and cars were damaged.

A suspect and the motive behind the incident has not yet been identified.
