The iconic Athlone Stadium in Cape Town has now been identified as one of the mass vaccination sites. The Western Cape’s head of health, Dr Keith Cloete made this statement during a digital briefing on the province’s COVID-19 statistics on Thursday, June 24.
According to Cloete, this site will have various vaccination stations, as well as drive-through stations. Cloete said the province has currently administered 372 307 vaccines, of which 279 154 were administered under Phase 2 of the vaccine roll-out plan, as per News24.
However, while the province currently has the capacity to administer 120 000 vaccine doses a day, supply constraints have hampered the roll-out, Cloete added.
The Western Cape Government also started the roll-out of vaccines to those in the basic education sector at the Pinelands Metro Emergency Medical Service site on Wednesday, June 23. This comes as the third wave of COVID-19 infections are rapidly increasing around the country.
The stadium becomes the province’s third mass vaccination site along with the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and a scaled-up version of the existing Metropolitan Health/Momentum site.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Health site is already operational, while the CTICC is scheduled to go live in July. The CTICC site is expected to administer more than 750 000 vaccinations in six months. The Athlone site will be up and running five to six weeks after the CTICC site.
The Western Cape also reported 14 844 active COVID-19 infections, with a total number of 314 596 COVID-19 cases and 287 573 recoveries as of Thursday, June 24.
