Western Cape head of health, Dr Keith Cloete, has urged residents to avoid social gatherings to help delay the third wave of the coronavirus. Cloete’s remarks came after the province recorded an increase in COVID-19 infections and hospital admissions.
The province recorded 4 439 active COVID-19 infections, with a total number of 295 493 cases and 279 217 recoveries as of Thursday, June 3.
According to IOL, Cloete said during Thursday’s Digicon that admissions were increasing slowly, with about 40 new admissions per day, while the average proportion of cases testing positive had also increased to 8.4%.
“If we want to meaningfully delay or flatten the curve, all of us need to strongly avoid gatherings and have much stronger adherence to the non-pharmaceutical interventions like mask-wearing and social distancing,” Cloete said.
Cloete said the department would be scaling up the health platform in preparation for the third wave, reported EWN.
“Preparations for a third wave are in full swing and we have trigger points to respond to the wave. We are calling on the whole of government and society to help us flatten the third wave,” the report quoted him as saying.
The report said the Western Cape was likely to experience a third wave of COVID-19 infections by next week or the week after.
