Vitanova, a connective tissue bank in South Africa, is a new state of the art engineering facility that opened its doors in Cape Town, as good things guy mentions.
This multi-tissue bank has been developed by Bone SA, which is a registered non-profit organisation that distributes bone and tissue products to medical facilities. Even though Vitanova is the third multi-tissue bank in the country, it will be the first to offer supercritical CO2 tissue sterilisation technology in Africa.
Vitanova was established with an aim to address the need for donated tissue and tissue products in South Africa. The facility will be dedicating its time to increase the availability of life-enhancing tissue products, increase the awareness of the need for tissue donation and host educational drives to show the importance of tissue donation.
The primary aim of this initiative is to get more people to register to become organ and tissue donors in South Africa.
The facility will use the materials from donors to create products which aims to heal and improve the lives of thousands of South Africans.
There will be training for registrars and nurses while other training and events will also be hosted on-site as a significant investment to grow the biomedical sector and tissue engineering capability in South Africa.
