Alcohol will soon be sold at various BP petrol stations in Gauteng and the Western Cape after the petrol retailer launched ‘wine on the go’ on Thursday, June 17, at one of their petrol stations in Radiokop north of Johannesburg.
According to Business Insider, BP became the first petroleum company to grant a liquor licence. However, only a small selection of wine, including sparkling wine will be on sale to the public.
The alcohol section will fall under the Pick n Pay Express section of the petrol stations shop, following a 13-year-old partnership that replaced some BP Express stores.
With more than 500 petrol stations across South Africa, BP indicated that it would not name the petrol stations as it will be targeted.
Meanwhile, following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s family meeting on Tuesday, June 15, restrictions have once again tightened on the sale of alcohol, making this the third ban the industry has seen since the first nationwide lockdown in March 2020.
