City Manager Achmat Ebrahim has resigned. In a letter sent out to City staff, Mayor Patricia De Lille confirmed that Ebrahim had tendered his resignation with immediate effect.
Ebrahim has been a loyal employee of the City dedicating almost 40 years of his life to the municipality. He stated in his resignation that his primary consideration was that of his personal and his family’s wellbeing
“I have come to know and respect Mr Ebrahim as a principled, hardworking public servant. His experience has been invaluable. It was an honour for me to work with him as a like-minded individual who always saw the need to act with urgency and in the best interests of the residents of our city,” De Lille said in a statement.
She also wished him well for the future and thanked him for his commitment and service to the people of Cape Town.
A week ago, during a private council meeting, a decision was taken to have De Lille investigated further. This came about because of allegations that she prevented Ebrahim from reporting incidents to council concerning maladministration against commissioner for transport development authority, Melissa Whitehead.
Both Ebrahim and Whitehead were given until this Friday to submit reasons why they should not be suspended pending a disciplinary inquiry into their conduct.
An ongoing public spat within the City of Cape Town is being played out and yesterday the Democratic Alliance (DA) decided to formally charged De Lille.
The party’s Federal Executive has recommended that De Lille be investigated by its legal commission for acting in a manner that negatively reflects on the image of the party. De Lille is currently facing charges of bringing the party into disrepute, refusing to comply with party decisions, undue interference and failing to perform duties and responsibilities.
