A grisly situation unfolded outside of Reddam House Atlantic Seaboard school in Green Point on Tuesday morning, where it is alleged that a parent was shot dead by unknown gunmen outside the school.

The incident occurred as the 50-year-old parent, rumoured to be attorney, Pete Mihalik, with ties to the criminal underworld, was dropping his son off at school. His son was also injured during the shooting.

“Detectives of the Anti-Gang unit and SAPS crime scene expects are combing the scene for clues following a shooting incident that occurred on the corner of Cavalcade and Thornhill in Green Point this morning at around 7.35am,” said South African Police Services spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana. “According to reports, a 50 year old man was shot in his head and fatally wounded in his vehicle by an unidentified suspect who is yet to be arrested. The suspect was seen fleeing the scene in a metallic grey VW Polo. The victim’s eight year old son sustained an injury during the incident and was admitted to hospital.”

A concerned parent has said that police presence is heavy at the scene of the crime, and that the area has been cordoned off. “I was trying to drop off my son, and police has already corndened off the area by the time I got there. It looked like the incident had happened about 10-15 minutes before we got here,” the parent said. “The school has advised that people will stay indoors for the rest of the day until investigators have finished their work. They have advised residents to stay away from the area.”

“The situation is very scary, as I just wanted to drop off my son. I worry for the safety of the kids sometimes, but it looks like the school has a plan in place. They are prepared for this, so they’re just doing their jobs now,” the parent added.

The parent noted that the area is now “eerily quiet”. “We just spoke to the investigating officer, and the victim is an advocate. The situation is tense outside of the crime scene.”

Family and friends of the school’s students have begun arriving to take students home.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated and anyone with information is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” Rwexana said.
