The mounting frustrations within the taxi industry have led to yet another strike, and more damage, after two buses were set alight in the early hours of Monday morning. Taxis were unable to transport commuters from Mitchells Plain, Wynberg, Durbanville, and in Khayelitsha no busses or taxis were operational on Monday morning.
Golden Arrow Bus Services confirmed that two buses were set alight, one in Makhaza, and another in Lingelethu West because of protests in the area.
Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Theo Layne, confirmed the incident. Tyres were also set alight on the N2 incoming before Mew Way, Khayelitsha.
Mayco member for transport and urban development, Brett Herron, said the City of Cape Town had been informed of a possible strike by taxi operators on Monday. This comes as a result of frustrations stemming from internal industry leadership elections.
As MyCiti bus drivers also rely on public transport, particularly minibus taxis, Herron warned that this may affect some MyCiti bus routes as well.
Thus far, no injuries have been reported. There is no information on how long the strike will last.
