A group of learners at Camps Bay High School has initiated a new project to raise funds for a year’s worth of sanitary products. The project kicked off earlier this year by the schools Representative Council of Learners (RCL) when they started buying sanitary pads and tampons and placing them in all of the female bathrooms.
At first, the project was on a trial basis to identify whether the sanitary products would be abused or not. However, the initiative was seen to be well-received by the pupils who went on to launch an internal funding drive with the parents and guardians at the school.
As reported by News 24, principal Louis Mostert expressed his gratitude to the pupils who started this project, indicating that the project will be sustainable in the long term. He also noted that the small gestures made a big difference in the lives of some of the school’s learners.
Meanwhile, the RCL has raised more than R17 000 and the funds will be used to buy products in bulk to ensure that there is never a shortage at the school. This is also one of many initiatives of its kind at schools around Cape Town after a sanitary pad vending machine was installed at the School of Hope in Observatory on Tuesday, April 13.
This unique initiative was started by the Non-Profit Organisation (NPO), O Graceland and the MENstruation Foundation. O Graceland houses young girls ageing out of childcare homes.
