Approximately 17 000 people have signed a petition demanding justice for Franco D’Este, a 20-year-old who was murdered outside of a Cape Town nightclub over the weekend. His alleged killer was released on bail of R2 000 after appearing in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday. This resulted in a friend of the deceased creating the petition.

“His loved ones sit in complete sorrow and this scum is out on bail! We need justice for him and others [who] have been innocently killed and their murderers that are walking free!” the petition’s creator, Amaarah Davids, wrote. “How many loved ones are still going to die this way and our government lets them walk out on bail? I need your help to sign this petition, this way we can demand the justice of our poor loved ones who have passed on.”

As reported by the Daily Voice, Ethan Fisher, who is D’Este’s alleged killer, handed himself over to the police along with the gun he alleges was used to kill D’Este. His bail was not opposed by the State.
D’Este’s mother Natasha told the Daily Voice that her son’s friends called her in the early hours of Saturday morning to inform her that her son had been taken to Christian Barnard Hospital. His friends reported that Fisher had claimed that D’Este and his friends had followed him during their night out, and allegedly shot him out of anger.
“I’m signing because I’m a mother and I have one child, a son, and I cannot stand by and let this sort of thing happen in my country,” one woman wrote after signing the petition.

Fisher is expected back in the dock by November 29.
