An official report created by Adzuna in January 2019 claims that Cape Town is the ‘best paying city’ in South Africa, followed by Johannesburg.
Adzuna, a job search engine founded in 2011, gathered data to determine the best and worst paying places in the country by analysing over 140 000 live jobs posted on its site. Fifty cities and towns were ranked in the study.
The analysis included comparing job vacancies and advertised salaries in each location during the month of January 2019. A study of the distribution of job titles and categories helped to determine the jobs most in demand in each city and province.
Cape Town was ranked number one for the ‘best city to land a job in’ with a recorded 14 023 advertised vacancies available for last month, showing an increase in job opportunities for residents in the Mother City.
Best Cities to land a job | Advertised Vacancies (January 2019) |
Cape Town | 14 023 |
Johannesburg | 13 657 |
Pretoria | 5 378 |
Durban | 3 316 |
East Rand (Ekurhuleni) | 2 778 |
The report found that the Northern Cape is the hardest place in the country to land a job, particularly in Namaqua and Kgalagadi, with a mere total of 133 vacancies currently advertised in both areas combined.
Johannesburg fell short of coming first in the ‘best paying city in South Africa’ rankings, with Cape Town taking the top spot with an average salary of R374 173 advertised for January.
The ‘best paying provinces in South Africa’ was given to the Western cape with an average advertised salary of R369 401 with Gauteng coming in second with R304 799.

Johannesburg | R359 285 |

Research by Adzuna indicated that the Free State is the worst paying city in the country, with an average pay of R210 837.
“As far as salaries are concerned, it seems like it doesn’t really pay to live and work in the Free State since average salaries here are much lower when compared to the national average,” says Adzuna in the report.
