If last year’s 50 000 strong carnival crowd was anything to go by, the Cape Town Carnival 2015 is going to be one massive event.

This celebration of Cape Town’s beauty and diversity focuses on creative expression while facilitating job creation and skills development behind the scenes.

As with any major event in the city, road closures are a reality. Here’s what you need to know about the carnival happening this Saturday from 4 pm.

Parking
Parking restrictions will be enforced in residential areas adjacent to the Fan Walk from 8 am to midnight on 14 March 2015. Motorists are advised to obey road signage. Please do not leave valuable items visible in parked vehicles.

  • On-street parking in the CBD will be available but no additional security will be provided. Parking tariffs will apply until 1 pm, at which point on-street parking becomes free of charge.
  • The V&A Waterfront has approximately 3 500 parking bays available to the general public at a charge.
  • Cape Quarter has 425 available parking bays on a first-come-first-served basis. A flat fee of R5 all day Saturday until 8 pm will be charged. After 8 pm it reverts to a normal parking tariff of R10 per hour. However after midnight Saturday it again reverts to the flat rate of R5 all day Sunday until 8 pm.

People with disabilities
Dedicated parking has been allocated at Gallows Hill Traffic Department. Only people with an official disability permit from the City will be allowed to park in this dedicated parking area. A raised viewing platform with wheelchair access is available on the Fan Walk.

Residents’ access
Residents living in Green Point between Highfield Road and York Street will have limited access on Saturday 14 March between 2 pm and 5 pm, thereafter residents are kindly required to display the provided vehicle access permit to gain access through Vesperdene Street via Upper Portswood Road.

NOTE Vehicle access permit holders can gain access to Green Point residential areas through the following controlled-access vehicle corridors in Somerset Road:

  • Between Upper Portswood and Vesperdene Roads.
  • Between Exhibition Terrace and Ashstead Road.
  • Between Highfield Road (including Son Vida vehicle entrance gate) and Boundary road

Roads between Buitengracht and Upper Portswood will be accessible from 11 pm on Sat 14 March. Roads between Upper Portswood and York Streets will be accessible as soon as safe and possible.

Public transport services that, for any portion of their routes, operate along closed or restricted roads may have some route section deviations. Normal scheduled bus services will be affected by these road closures in the Green Point area as well as the CBD from 2 pm.
