A 32-year-old police officer was killed in the line of duty while two others were injured on Sunday morning.

As reported by News24, police were performing crime prevention duties in Spekboom Street, Delft, when an unknown man opened fire on their vehicle. This is the shooting that led to the death of the 32-year-old officer, and the serious injury of one of his colleagues. A second patrol vehicle responded to the shooting, and the same man opened fire on this vehicle too.

Three police officers retaliated with live rounds, leaving the shooter injured. The 24-year-old shooter was then arrested.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was informed of the matter, and the name of the slain police officer has not yet been released.

Following the shooting, Western Cape police have intensified their deployment to the area.

The shooting occurred three days after the army was finally seen in the surrounding Cape Flats areas, and will assist with rolling joint operations in the ten most dangerous precincts in the city. They are not present in these areas 24-hours a day, but rather assist during joint missions. They have been deployed for a total of 60 days.
