Few things herald the official start of the festive season in the Mother City as much the switching on of the Christmas lights in the Cape Town CBD.
The lights now form part of the annual Festival of Lights event, which has grown over the years to become the city’s largest free open-air celebration. At least 80,000 people at the Grand Parade near the City Hall were treated to an incredible show last night by the likes of Cassper Nyovest, Mafikizolo, Jimmy Nevis, Goldfish and Snotkop.
The theme for this year was We Love Africa, and Cape Town Executive Mayor Patricia De Lille says the massive event forms part of the city council’s goal to create an inclusive city and establish Cape Town as the ‘Gateway to Africa’.
