A grandmother from Delft in Cape Town recently turned 100 years old, celebrating her milestone on Wednesday, June 16. Sofie Fortuin was treated by her neighbours as they joined her to help celebrate her centenary.

Fortuin, fondly known as ‘Freda’ to her community was born in Philippi in 1921. The centenarian has outlived her four children and has five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

As reported by IOL, Freda worked on various farms in her younger days and she can still recall how they would work, sorting out the leaves of tobacco.

According to Freda, she owes her life to her mother as she continued to honour her mother all these years. She now lives with one of her granddaughters.

Freda added, that she has always wanted her own television where she can sit in her room and watch tv without disturbing others.
