Cape Town has been declared the city with the lowest unemployment rate in the whole of South Africa.
The City of Cape Town announced that the Mother City’s unemployment rate sits at 21.7% – a 1.5%, a decrease from the previous quarter and a 2.2% decrease on a year-on-year basis.
Figures from Statistics South Africa show that the formal sector currently has 1 285 791 employed Capetonians, while the informal sector has 170 089 individuals.
This marks the sixth consecutive quarter that the Mother City’s employment levels have increased.
Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille says that 89 000 Capetonians were employed in the fourth quarter of 2017. “Today, I am pleased to reflect on the city’s encouraging economic results where 89 000 more Cape Town residents were employed in the fourth quarter of 2017 than during the same period in 2016,” De Lille said in a statement.
“Cape Town’s growing employment is a testament to the City’s efforts to create an enabling environment for businesses to invest and to create new jobs.”
eThekwini is a close second with 21.9% people unemployed, while Nelson Mandela Bay has a whopping 36.9% unemployment rate. Johannesburg notes a rate of 28.2%.
De Lille added that the City will continue it’s efforts to ensure more jobs are created, and that poverty be addressed.
“We will continue working hard on our efforts to bring more investment and create more jobs in Cape Town so that we can address poverty and unemployment and put a greater dent into the number of people who are still without work.”
