The Cape Town International Jazz Festival has been postponed for the foreseeable future.
The popular events organisers announced on Twitter that as a result of the current concerns around the spread of the coronavirus, they are taking the step as a public health measure.
“This was a difficult yet entirely necessary decision and we’re sure you share in both our disappointment and understanding of why we had to postpone the event at such short notice,” the tweet said.
The annual multi-stage event brings talent from across the world to the city to entertain a large audience over a weekend. It had already lost prominent South African Jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim who pulled out citing coronavirus concerns.
“There is still too much uncertainty and we are not prepared to jeopardise the health of you, our loyal Festinos, our local and international artists, and our fellow South Africans. Please refer to our website for questions regarding the refund of your tickets,” the organisers said.
This is not the first event to fall victim to the current wave of heightened precautions as a result of the pandemic, conferences across the country have been cancelled. Major sporting events globally have also been postponed or cancelled.
