A Cape Town attorney appeared in court on Monday on charges relating to the sexual abuse of minors, reports say.

According to News24, the 36-year-old man was arrested last week after three children reported him to the police.

“Three victims reported the case and one victim is 14 years. The suspect appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of unlawfully and intentionally engaging services of a child younger than 18 years for financial/other rewards, to perform sexual act with that child… whether it is committed or not,” the report quoted police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana as saying.

A report by IOL said the lawyer was greeted by protesters outside of court, who chanted: “Protect our children, no bail for sexual offenders, hoping the magistrate presiding over the case would hear their pleas.

“Our kids are innocent.

“No bail for rapists, no bail for sexual abuse.”

They also hoisted placards, which read: “Save our children, protect my innocence, children can’t stop child abuse, adults can.”

The matter was postponed to May 25 for a bail application and further investigation.

Hartzenberg remained behind bars.
