The Cape Town Stadium in Green Point has been selected as finalist in the prestigious Event of the Year award 2019, which is given to an outstanding stadium each year at the Stadium Business Summit.
Executive Mayor Dan Plato says that the success can be attributed to the hard work of the stadium’s management team and event organisers.
“This recognition is testament to the great collaboration between the Cape Town Stadium management, the event organisers and all of those involved in putting this showpiece together.”
Entering the awards after hosting the HSBC Cape Town Sevens, the local stadium will go head-to-head against other event-hosting stadiums across the world. Some competitors include stadiums in Russia, Spain, England, the United States, and Australia.
It is the only award of its kind in the industry and is presented annually at the Stadium Business Summit in the United Kingdom. The 2019 awards ceremony will take place at the Emirates Old Trafford on June 4 2019 in Manchester, England.
The awards were created to recognise achievement, innovation and fresh thinking in the world of stadium and sports-event venue management. It also functions to raise industry standards and encourage greater professionalism, along with increasing awareness of the stadium and sports venue sector.
Plato comments on our city’s level of excellence and professionalism in hosting events.
“Having developed a strong track-record as the World’s Leading Festival and Event destination, the shortlisting is testament to Cape Town’s ability to host high-quality events and the expertise in stadium management.”
The most recent event at the stadium in Green Point, two back-to-back, hugely-attended Ed Sheeran concerts, stands testament to the facility’s ability to deliver quality events.
“As the City, we are proud of the Cape Town Stadium management as well as the event organiser for putting together an event that is being recognised by international audiences.
“We wish the Cape Town Stadium management well ahead of the award ceremony,” says Plato.
