Kelvin Grove Club in Cape Town will be playing host to South Africa’s crucial tie against Bulgaria in the Davis Cup on September 13 and 14 2019, Tennis South Africa has announced.
The SA Davis Cup team was relegated from Team 1 to Team 2 of the tournament, and their match against the Bulgarian team will determine whether South Africa can win back their previous spot.
Kelvin Grove is one of the country’s leading tennis facilities, and will also host the ITF Junior Grade A just after the Davis Cup tie.
“We decided to take this Davis Cup tie to Cape Town for two reasons – firstly the core of the team are based in the city and the players have been keen to play in their home town for a while now. Secondly, with the ITF Grade A taking place in the Mother City shortly after the tie, it provided a unique opportunity to create a week-long festival of tennis at Kelvin Grove,” said Tennis SA CEO Richard Glover to EWN.
“This should prove to be a spectacular event with the likes of Grigor Dimitrov potentially showing up. It is homeground to the majority of the team so there should be great support willing our team forward. The entire team is ecstatic at the prospect of playing in front of their friends and families,” Team Captain Marcos Ondruska said.
South Africa currently sits at number 44 on the Davis Cup rankings, while Bulgaria sits at 64th place.
