If you value your privacy, you may want to look away now.

After several successful trials in police raids, you can expect to see lot more crime-fighting drones whirring around the City of Cape Town. Drones give police an aerial advantage previously reserved for helicopters but at a fraction of the running costs.

The City sourced the drone used in a recent drug bust on the Cape Flats from local manufacturer Dronetec. A Dronetec W.A.S.P. Mk4 drone fitted with an infrared camera lay in wait as the police closed in on the suspect’s house. Thanks to the drone’s technology coupled with an LED spotlight and a Sony TV camera, police were able to use the drone to get thermal imaging on the suspects from above.

Surveillance drones, also know as RPAs (remotely piloted aircraft), add a new dimension to police operations, owing to their ability to get into places that may be inaccessible by foot. If a criminal flees from a scene or hides drugs, the ever-watchful eye of the surveillance drone would see it all and report back.

Last year it was  confirmed by the City of Cape Town that surveillance drones would be purchased to help keep a watchful eye on the public.

It’s beginning to feel like the future. Read more about policing and drones here.

If I had been asked if I wanted to choose between my freedom and my security I would have chosen freedom, saying no to drones, because the state has already convinced me that they can’t give me security, despite all the cameras.

Firstly, you cannot shoot them down, secondly, it cannot be an invasion of privacy as they are strategically placed above hot spots…i say let let them “drone” and then assess how effective it proves to be, and if it is…send up a few more. And yes, while they are at it…drop a few koeksisters for good measure…lol!

That’s the problem with our society. Waiting for hand outs and throwing tantrums like little children instead of putting together postive and constructive plans and approaching the City of Cape Town to help get the plan funded and actioned. But truth be told. No one ever looks after anything that they get for nothing. Easy come, easy go! “Ag who cares Municipality can just build another one.” Is the attitude. Why don’t community memebers get together and work together to improve the informal settlements. Like start by stop throwing your trash on the ground and cleaning up all the rubbish together? It saddens me when you drive through an informal settlement and just see rubbish every where, the people are poor not incapable! Like my mother always said, just because you are poor doesn’t mean you have to be dirty. It’s an attitude problem. No care for the environment around you. You don’t walk through a suburb and see rubbish everywhere because home owners and tenants keep their properties and sidewalks clean because regardless they take pride in whatever little home they have earned. That’s why this hand out business needs to stop and everyone needs to havr oppprtunity to work. WE NEED JOBS not toilets and we need less crime so more jobs can be possible because crime effects businesses and profits which then effects their ability to keep or hire staff. It’s a vicious cycle. Just like illegal cigarettes, petrol tanker hijackings, truck load hijackings, warehouse robberies… these crimes cause some companies to have to close their doors eventually and that means all the staff lose their jobs too

Firstly Let’s be realistic and look at the cost of these drones, then secondly look at how many drones are going to be in circulation, the third question follows from the second that if it’s only a few, which areas are going to be the focus points. As it is, our roads have become death traps bcz the taxi industry acts with impunity by putting the lives of motorists and passengers at risk, constantly and brazenly breaking all laws, drug and ganglords commits serious crimes but their foot soldiers (mainly misguided youth) take the rap and the communities are petrified of blowing the whistle bcz they disappear B4 they even get to testify, there are corrupt police and other government officials on the payroll of dangerous criminals and businesses. 20 yrs after democracy and the majority of ‘blacks’ and a significant percentage of ‘coloureds’ live are homeless and jobless, and/or live in areas where service delivery of municipalities fail them, and to many of the children living in crime infested areas where police themselves reluctantly venture, have to witness killings and terror from a very young age, babies and up to elderly women are raped daily, and other violent crimes committed daily in South Africa. So this drone idea must be weighed against a number of issues. Let’s be fair and realistic B4 we ‘shoot’ each other’s comments down.

so you’re all duped into believing drones are for our benefit, sure, it will start out that way, by the time my kids are my age, these same drones will be their worst nightmare… better than drones, lets each do something positive to fight crime & injustice, corruption & xenophobia, & the apartheid that exists in our minds, lets also resolve to vote & appoint politicians who will actually work for the people as apposed to these who work for themselves, against the people.

This is what the police. Need. An armed drone. Look up FPSRUSSIA Drone and watch the video. Crime needs a huge blow in this country and it is long been time to fight back. Of course the use of drones need to be governed propperly due to privacy issues, but let’s face it. Due to satellite technology that has already been lost. This would be a small sacrifice to get the streets back.

Moho the people who live in Constantia and Sandton worked hard for many years and used their brains to get there. They were not GIVEN any handouts to get there! Why is it that so many S Africans today expect handouts for nothing and do not realize that people in nice suburbs had to work for maybe 20 or more years to earn and save for what they have! Somebody even has to work and pay rates and taxes so others can have more benefits – apparently some for free! If you get anything for free then you should look after it and not destroy it!
