If you value your privacy, you may want to look away now.
After several successful trials in police raids, you can expect to see lot more crime-fighting drones whirring around the City of Cape Town. Drones give police an aerial advantage previously reserved for helicopters but at a fraction of the running costs.
The City sourced the drone used in a recent drug bust on the Cape Flats from local manufacturer Dronetec. A Dronetec W.A.S.P. Mk4 drone fitted with an infrared camera lay in wait as the police closed in on the suspect’s house. Thanks to the drone’s technology coupled with an LED spotlight and a Sony TV camera, police were able to use the drone to get thermal imaging on the suspects from above.
Surveillance drones, also know as RPAs (remotely piloted aircraft), add a new dimension to police operations, owing to their ability to get into places that may be inaccessible by foot. If a criminal flees from a scene or hides drugs, the ever-watchful eye of the surveillance drone would see it all and report back.
Last year it was confirmed by the City of Cape Town that surveillance drones would be purchased to help keep a watchful eye on the public.
It’s beginning to feel like the future. Read more about policing and drones here.
If it helps fighting the crime ravishing our city, by all means keep them way up there.
can they deliver koeksisters?
Big brother.
Lucrative idea Trevor. We like!
Agreed if they can spy on people who do bad things … bring them on … in fact can i have one above my house please
Anything to make us all feel safe and catch the $#@&^$#$ doing the crime
only dagga
My first though was that someone *cough cough* will try steal one
Wow it’s big brother watching !!!
If it helps to fight crime then I think its ok
If they do the job, why not, anything to prevent crime!!
Matter of time before one gets shot down !
for what? there cameras in the townships but i was told that it is used for high profile cases its just stupid to introduce things which you will not use for south africans
Yeah brilliant idea!
That’s cool.. Reminds me of the SOUTH PARK episode.
Brilliant idea!!!!
Hope they don’t get hijacked
Orwellian but I’ll take it.
2 dozen please! 😉 and cupcakes 😉
Can the public help fund it?
the reason we have this alarming crime rate is in order for the powers that be can institute toys like tgese in order to invade our privacy… we’re heading back into darkness.
ja swaar even some roti will do
Seriously?
Very glad if it helps fighting crime
Dallyn Vico
Have to be a sniper to do that – rival gangs can’t even manage to hit a target on the ground other than bystanders
I suppose you try everthing once.
Either they will be stolen or Crash. In theory it is good but in reality a different story
Very true zayed. This is a licence to invade privacy.
GOOD…
Awesome
Good if used for the right resons
The answer to crime.prevention.
Ignorance is bliss
Monitoring only is not enough, we must work on a quick an efficient response, no use looking down but no1 to help on the ground
First they’ll spy, but wait till they start arming drones!
Mal oor di goetjies..wil self een he…
How’s that tin-foil hat fitting?
Hellfire missiles ! Reading a book about them at the moment
there are weapons other than rifles !
If the evidence collected by these drones can be used in court and fight crime then go for it. If you have nothing to hide you don’t have to worry about invasion of privacy 🙂
Can they deliver pizzas
If it’s soft in the air then yeah. But if it’s loud they’ll shoot it down.
Yes definitely think they will increase our security.
The DA are the nannies after all and nannies don’t allow their charges privacy or responsibility or to think for themselves. Scary times. If I had been asked if I wanted to choose between my freedom and my security I would have chosen freedom, saying no to drones, because the state has already convinced me that they can’t give me security, despite all the cameras.
Brilliant catch the criminals i say
Send them to the kruger rather!!! Save our rhinos you flippen chops….
They will only be used for raids etc. They cannot hang up there all day spying on someone.
Can you arm them too please.
Your human right to privacy shouldn’t be sacrificed so whimsically. And neither should you support the sacrificing of other people’s right to privacy. The quality of our lives isn’t decided in court and courts do not provide security or justice.
Mark
I fully support the use of drones. It allow you access where you can’t get to. As long it is not encroaching on peoples privacy.
is this even legal? What about peoples right to privacy in their yards? just asking…..
watching your every move.
I am all for it, especially if they can help prevent more deaths in the areas where the gangs are going ape – again.
Anton Schutte
I have nothing to hide.
We are already IN darkness.
Heard about it and it would be great for kenfack then atleast we can fl safer
A lot of trouble and misuse is going to come with this. Good for crime but then the police must first get themselves sorted out.
Send it to Manenberg for target practice.
Waste of money, you require an operator as well and someone will shoot them down and sell the parts for scrap lol
They going to steel and sell it for drugs
That would be good Rudien Ajam
O jinne, hulle meng mos nou in met “privaatheid” en “vrye beweging”?
Gregg Walker
Cape Town very good in spending money on things which are not important to its people things like speed traps etc very good, But important things which needs urgent attention they are not attended to. WHERE IS THE PROPER TOILETS FOR POOR PEOPLE???
we must use them when it is needed
Good job they are battery powered ,or they would never leave the ground with all your power cuts ?
lokl!!! i dont mind drones, as long as they can actually do what they are set to do, deliver and aid in dropping crime then why not.
i am afraid that before you know it, these thieves will steal them out the sky.
Soon there will be more drones than birds in the sky
Drug merchants would love this
It’s Bad Enough Having Car Guards Who Can’t DRIVE.
DRONES Operated By Non Pilots
WORSE.. LOL
1ST VIDEO
Zuma Residence. ????
If you have a clean slate you have nothing to worry about. Paranoid much? LOL we are in darkness already. Loadshedding again from pm.
Big brother needed to beat sort out the little brothers.
If you have nothing to hide then what is the problem? Our human right to security is being compromised daily.
its about time very good idea let it be….
I’m all for it if they can fire on criminals. Too many low lifes around.
Might be a challange for our south easters and winter winds and rain.
Until you get mugged, hi-jacked or your house burgled. You’d sing a different tune.
Wonderful idea!!
Where are the people that need toilets? Are they incapable of building their own? How many have been built and are now in pieces because the people can’t take care of what they have or keep them clean? Anything that improves security is important.
And people’s right to security?
I’ve had every one of those things happen to me and worse. That’s how I know there is no security.
mch needed bring it to the whre it is mch needef
Anything to fight this out of control crime…
Yes….arm the drones…U0001f44dU0001f379
Yes. You can’t put the genie back in the bottle.
I can easily edit video footage. This can be used for political gain as well
Stop waiting for handouts while the rest of the country work hard for their own
Great idea
Oh i remember those South Easters well.
Drones can shoot.Man control drones.another way to energies killings
Drones are horrible things..it kills me how people want to be policed
Be realistic, they would only be flying in areas where they are needed! The more the merrier!
Add turrets, machine guns, and missiles and get rid of the gangsters and their cancerous products and values.
I think this is great and no law should be introduced to ban them
Drone deliveries…. U0001f602
Since there is quite a mixed reaction on this thread, what are the alternatives..? Firstly, you cannot shoot them down, secondly, it cannot be an invasion of privacy as they are strategically placed above hot spots…i say let let them “drone” and then assess how effective it proves to be, and if it is…send up a few more. And yes, while they are at it…drop a few koeksisters for good measure…lol!
Great idea…but a look into the future tells me that one day they’ll be so numerous we’ll be swatting them like wasps.
Bring them on !!!!
Nn
As long as once the criminal is caught the justice system must play their part!
Very big brother ish but will work for patrolling Table Mountain national park.
My first thought was big brother but hey it is a good idea,
Kak
Great crime fighting tool
In other news, paintball and pellet gun sales have mysteriously soared. Authorities are investigating a possible correlation.
Excellent idea
YesYesYes!! But make it completely legal for everyone
they need the latest one,AGM-114 called HELLFIRE,
Yes yes
Not bad.
Bring them on…. who is in the Control Room?
Ha ha
Good news
get the daym army in leave this air wolf ideas
Bring it on..!
Not a brilliant idea, this is just another method of coming info your personal space. Instead of employing more people to do these stuff. Computers over people, one day everyone will be out of work
anything to reduce crime
Next the criminals R Gna invest in canons and missiles and shoot the drone out of the air…just something to think about
Ek soek ook een….met ‘n kamera!
Lmbimp!! Jy se hulle moet die air wolf gedagtes aflos. Leka lag ek now.
Brilliant idea!
lol army will work
That’s the problem with our society. Waiting for hand outs and throwing tantrums like little children instead of putting together postive and constructive plans and approaching the City of Cape Town to help get the plan funded and actioned. But truth be told. No one ever looks after anything that they get for nothing. Easy come, easy go! “Ag who cares Municipality can just build another one.” Is the attitude. Why don’t community memebers get together and work together to improve the informal settlements. Like start by stop throwing your trash on the ground and cleaning up all the rubbish together? It saddens me when you drive through an informal settlement and just see rubbish every where, the people are poor not incapable! Like my mother always said, just because you are poor doesn’t mean you have to be dirty. It’s an attitude problem. No care for the environment around you. You don’t walk through a suburb and see rubbish everywhere because home owners and tenants keep their properties and sidewalks clean because regardless they take pride in whatever little home they have earned. That’s why this hand out business needs to stop and everyone needs to havr oppprtunity to work. WE NEED JOBS not toilets and we need less crime so more jobs can be possible because crime effects businesses and profits which then effects their ability to keep or hire staff. It’s a vicious cycle. Just like illegal cigarettes, petrol tanker hijackings, truck load hijackings, warehouse robberies… these crimes cause some companies to have to close their doors eventually and that means all the staff lose their jobs too
Not sure if it will prove worthwhile. But nothing ventured is nothing gained. So let the trials begin
hahaha
Nathan Heyns
Ali Mahomed
Candice Potgieter WHO IS WE? You probably from Constantia or Sandton hence your comment.
Drones will never reduce crime, waste just like Etolls
They should be fitted with frikkin “lazers”
This is wat u no creating things stop crime but u are the first that creating trouble in the land than u thinking about lower class people u showing the drones than u think how to stop crime u preparing to fight the crime but anyway congratulations
Until the gangsters shoot them down.
No such thing as secure drones
The people will not resist in fact they will insist- Orwell
moving target, oops i thought it was a bird, time to take out my old “ketty”.
rather cctv the streets,al of them, like in the uk.
I think they’re creating quite a buzz…..
Firstly Let’s be realistic and look at the cost of these drones, then secondly look at how many drones are going to be in circulation, the third question follows from the second that if it’s only a few, which areas are going to be the focus points. As it is, our roads have become death traps bcz the taxi industry acts with impunity by putting the lives of motorists and passengers at risk, constantly and brazenly breaking all laws, drug and ganglords commits serious crimes but their foot soldiers (mainly misguided youth) take the rap and the communities are petrified of blowing the whistle bcz they disappear B4 they even get to testify, there are corrupt police and other government officials on the payroll of dangerous criminals and businesses. 20 yrs after democracy and the majority of ‘blacks’ and a significant percentage of ‘coloureds’ live are homeless and jobless, and/or live in areas where service delivery of municipalities fail them, and to many of the children living in crime infested areas where police themselves reluctantly venture, have to witness killings and terror from a very young age, babies and up to elderly women are raped daily, and other violent crimes committed daily in South Africa. So this drone idea must be weighed against a number of issues. Let’s be fair and realistic B4 we ‘shoot’ each other’s comments down.
I’d love to see it in a howling South East wind. Take-off would be hairy, landing difficult if not impossible.
George Orwell 1984…..Biv Brother Is Watching You!
Taking away more of our civil liberties. They can already look into your bedroom. Police city with a self appointed sheriff J.P Smith.
No not a good idea… starts off as something good but ultimately becomes another plan
Thanks for starting my day with a good laugh U0001f60a
so you’re all duped into believing drones are for our benefit, sure, it will start out that way, by the time my kids are my age, these same drones will be their worst nightmare… better than drones, lets each do something positive to fight crime & injustice, corruption & xenophobia, & the apartheid that exists in our minds, lets also resolve to vote & appoint politicians who will actually work for the people as apposed to these who work for themselves, against the people.
No problem as long as there is an accountable independent sector policing the police to limit corruption and misuse
I think its
Great
I am definitely going to have fun when I come for a visit…can anyone say “skyjack”
This is how scary Si-Fi movies always start!
This is what the police. Need. An armed drone. Look up FPSRUSSIA Drone and watch the video. Crime needs a huge blow in this country and it is long been time to fight back. Of course the use of drones need to be governed propperly due to privacy issues, but let’s face it. Due to satellite technology that has already been lost. This would be a small sacrifice to get the streets back.
I like your reply Candice Potgieter.
Excellent. By time too.
Moho the people who live in Constantia and Sandton worked hard for many years and used their brains to get there. They were not GIVEN any handouts to get there! Why is it that so many S Africans today expect handouts for nothing and do not realize that people in nice suburbs had to work for maybe 20 or more years to earn and save for what they have! Somebody even has to work and pay rates and taxes so others can have more benefits – apparently some for free! If you get anything for free then you should look after it and not destroy it!
Drones?really?
I wonder who’s going to fly them LOL
Just something else that the lawless will use for target practice (if the road signs are anything to go by)!!
Yes it is time.
God Bless You Both!
Spy cameras!
I think they would be great, but not in the wrong hands,
