The Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Cape Town planted 300 plants in the Jack Muller Park in Bellville on Saturday, June 5 for World Environment Day to restore the seasonal wetland!
According to Good Things Guy, World Environment Day has been celebrated since June 5, 1974 to create awareness globally and take action to protect the environment.
The aim of the endeavour is to restore the wetland. This restoration project kicked off by reintroducing indigenous wetland plant species, that were suitable, for the Jack Muller Park site.
The rehabilitation project began this month through the cooperation between the City’s Recreation and Parks and Biodiversity Management Branches (BMB).
BMB will be supplying indigenous plants that grew specifically for the reintroduction in the park, while Recreation and Parks will make sure the area is well prepared for planting, ensuring the survival of the re-introduced plants over the periods of season change.
The planting was attended by representatives from Friends of Jack Muller Park and the Community Women in Action (a young youth group from Eersteriver) who support ways to maintain all vegetation in the park regularly.
