The Chairperson of the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association(CATA) Victor Wiwi, has been shot dead in Nyanga last night, April 7.
It is alleged that Wiwi and two others were shot while travelling in the direction of Nyanga.
Western Cape Transport Minister, Bonginkosi Madikizela, has confirmed that Wiwi later died in hospital.
A statement, released by Madikizela the minister confirmed that the incident happened about two hours after Wiwi called and briefed him about a meeting he attended with the Laingsburg Municipality on Wednesday.
“I am shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Mr Victor Wiwi,” the statement said.
He describes Wiwi as a respected and soft spoken leader who demonstrated his dedication towards making peace and ending violence.
“I extend my sincere condolences to the families, to the members of CATA and the colleagues in the broader taxi industry,” Madikizela said.
Madikizela has also urged CATA leaders and its members to remain calm and to allow the police to do their work.
“We need to get to the bottom of taxi-related killings in our province.”
“I urge SAPS to prioritize this case,” Madikizela said.
Meanwhile, the minister has called an urgent meeting with the leadership of the SANTACO.
SABC reports that more than 100 people have died in taxi-related killings on the Cape Flats since last year.
