The ongoing taxi violence in Ceres in the Western Cape has claimed yet another life of a taxi driver and wounding a four-year-old boy who was caught by a stray bullet on Tuesday, June 15. It is alleged that three unidentified men approached the taxi (which operates as school transport in Eluxolweni Street, Nduli) and fired several shots. The shots resulted in killing the driver instantly while the young boy was transported to a nearby hospital where he is still fighting for his life.
As reported by IOL, police spokesperson Andrè Traut indicated that the circumstances surrounding the taxi driver’s murder and the attempted murder of the boy are being investigated and no arrest have been made yet, as the incident is allegedly connected to route control.
This is the second incident to take place in the Boland area after five taxi operators who belonged to the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) was gunned down on Tuesday, June 8, EWN reports.
Meanwhile, ward councillor Nomzame Phatsoane said the area still remains tense as the people gathered outside the Nduli township on Wednesday, June 16, to pay tribute to the five taxi operators that were killed. According to Phatsoane, residents are still in shock and are severely concerned that more innocent people could get caught in this, especially children.
The shootings bring the total number of taxi-related murders in the province to 53 since the start of the year, with attempted murders and injuries standing at 20.
