Children from the Wolweriver and Khayelitsha townships will be helping to clean up their communities by collecting rubbish that will in turn be transformed into art. This is part of a project by Giving is Living which aims to spark childrens’ interest in art as well as teach them about the importance of keeping the environment clean.
Workshops will be organised within the townships to help the participating children with the project and to ensure that young ones who are not so artistically inclined are included in the activities.
The project carries an incentive for the children who participate – all will receive a prize for dedicating their time and effort towards sustainable art creations. The prize will be an experience that the children would not otherwise have been able to have, such as a visit to the aquarium, a day at Boulder’s Beach, an outing to Seal Island, or a trip up Table Mountain.
The works of art will be auctioned and sold at the Pieces for Paws Wine & Cheese Art Auction organised by Giving is Living on March 16, and the proceeds made will be used to give back to the community, including its animals. This will be done with the help of the Mdzananda Animal Clinic, SANCCOB and Wolwerivier Outreach Work.
“In order to attract a larger crowd to the Art Auction, we have invited local South African artists to join our cause and sponsor some art. We have had an incredible response and have managed to secure donations from artists all over South Africa. Below is a list of all the Artists donating their work to this cause,” Giving is Living, the organiser of the auction, says. “In the build-up to the art auction, we are hosting art workshops within the townships related to the charities we are raising money for. The theme is Art from Trash – we are encouraging the children to collect trash from their communities so it can be turned into art.”
The workshops will be attended by some of the artists as well as volunteers from Giving is Living.
