The City of Cape Town is investigating who dumped over 100 oil containers into the sea near Three Anchor Bay. At 8am on Thursday [October 5], the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre received a call alerting them to a potential disaster in the water.
They immediately attended to the scene and found scores of oil bottles floating in the water. City officials even jumped into the icy-cold water to gather some of the bright yellow containers before they caused harm to the sealife. Luckily the containers were empty and there doesn’t seem to be any evidence of an oil spill in the area.
City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Marian Nieuwoudt, said the clean up should have been completed on Thursday afternoon.
“We don’t know who is behind this act, or what their motive is, but we believe that they were dumped on purpose. We will use footage from CCTV cameras in the vicinity of the bay to see if we can identify those responsible,” she said.
“I want to commend our officials for their swift response, and commitment to retrieving the containers from the bay. They have collected a total of 113 plastic containers. These have been removed off site for appropriate disposal,” said Nieuwoudt.
