Imagine hopping on to a MyCiti bus and then on to a train without having to worry about producing different tickets to travel on each? This could soon be a reality.

Good news for those who use the City of Cape Town’s public transport system – the city is in talks to implement a ‘one ticket system’ for MyCiti buses, minibus taxis, Metrorail trains and privately owned bus operators.

The proposed integrated ticketing system would make use of the ‘myconnect’ card currently used for the MyCiti BRT system, but there are several snags in the plan to get this off the ground, including (you guessed it) load-shedding.

I feel that the plan is a step in the right direction, but feels like ‘putting a band-aid on a broken leg’ – we need to address the critical issues like service delivery and, on a national scale, load-shedding, before we can start thinking about a flawless and efficient transport system.
