The City of Cape Town is urging Cape Town’s beach-goers to leave their alcohol at home and not bring their booze to the beach. It said thousands of bottles have already been confiscated.

The city said people are still sneaking alcohol onto the beach despite renewed calls prohibiting this. This follows the more than 900 bottles confiscated off Cape Town beaches over the Christmas long weekend.

The festive period will see thousands of people flocking to beaches. Metro Police Chief, Wayne Le Roux said Muizenberg is currently the busiest beach in the City, with around 10, 000 people visiting.

Le Roux said that drinking alcohol on the beach is also a contributor to road accidents.

“Don’t bring alcohol to the beaches because it’s unnecessary. People drink and then get into their vehicles and drive and that’s when accidents happen.

“But at most of our beaches we have confiscated alcohol. There’s been a significant drop compared to previous years, but it’s still a concern for us.”
