The Western Cape Government says the plans to open up a mass vaccination site at the iconic Athlone stadium in August are currently in motion. This site will be Cape Town’s first drive-through mass vaccination facility set to open on the Cape Flats.
The City has leased the stadium free of charge to the Western Cape Government, which will be used to administer COVID-19 vaccines.
In a statement, Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde indicated that the aim was to open a site so that every single resident can have access to life-saving vaccines.
“I am therefore extremely excited that we will be opening a mass vaccination site in Athlone, bringing vaccines close to residents across the Metro. Like we have shown with the CTICC Vaccination Centre of Hope, and now with the Athlone Stadium mass site, we are committed to pursuing partnerships that will bring services closer to people,” Premier Winde was quoted saying.
Winde added that, although 589 022 vaccinations have already been administered in the province, the Western Cape Government are on track to administer 120 000 vaccines in the coming week. The drive-through site will follow the same rules as the walk-through one with cars stopping at stations, which will ensure that residents are successfully screened, registered and vaccinated.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape has reported 27 298 active COVID-19 infections, with a total number of 345 262 confirmed and 305 049 recoveries as of Friday, July 9.

144 Additional deaths have also been recorded since the last provincial COVID-19 update on Thursday, July 8, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the province to 12 915. Premier Winde has also urged residents who are eligible to get the vaccine during the latest phase, to register.
Everyone over the age of 50 is currently eligible to register for their COVID-19 vaccine, and is urged to do so by using any of the following steps:
- Visit http://vaccine.enroll.health.gov.za
- WhatsApp the word REGISTER to 0600 123456
- Dial *134*832*ID number# if you don’t have internet access
- If you are over 60, you can be registered and vaccinated in one go at your nearest site.
