Parents are calling for the charges against a Cape Town high school principal. It is alleged that protesters made their voices heard outside the offices of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) on Tuesday, April 26.
As reported by SABC, Heathfield High Principal, Wesley Neumann, faces six charges after allegedly failing to open the school amid the COVID-19 peak infection period last year. It is alleged that parents, pupils and advocacy groups all came out to support Neumann. A spokesperson for the Progressive Organisation Formation, Brian Isaacs said the alleged thing Neumann did wrong was to consult his School Governing Body (SGB) and they decided to recommend to the parents of the school during June 2020 to keep the students at home but the students who did come to school were accommodated.
Meanwhile, SGB chairperson Vasoula Bailey said it was their view that Neumann, in his capacity as principal of Heathfield High School, was a leader and mouthpiece of the broader school community and the charges brought against him were because he was protecting the best interests of the community’s children under his care, IOL reported. Neumann’s case is still ongoing pending the outcome of the investigation.
